CHAPTER FOURTEEN

No cars stood in the driveway of Pete’s apartment. No one was home on the main floor, or on the upper level of the house where the other tenant lived. Not surprising in the middle of the day, but it gave Dan something to do while he waited to hear from Ryker.

Despite his bragging, Ryker had yet to get back to Dan with his report on Pete.

Not a good sign.

Dan headed around the front to where Rebecca stood by the car when he got the text. “Shit.” He rubbed shaking hands over his face while he leaned against the brick wall. He knew, damn it. Hell, he’d known three years ago, but didn’t listen to his gut. How the hell did he tell the woman he loved that he’d fucked up? That because of his colossal screw up, she might never see her daughter again.

Rebecca appeared around the corner, cellphone in hand. “He’s still not answering his phone, and he didn’t show up for work today. What about you?”

“Nothing.” He averted his eyes as he tucked his phone into the back pocket of his jeans. “The door’s locked, and there’s no sign of forced entry. From what I can see through the window, nothing to indicate a struggle either. If someone grabbed him, it must have been from somewhere else. I’ll run his plates.”

“We should stop at Ruby’s and ask,” Rebecca said, following along behind him. “She’s on top of everything that happens around here. Besides, it’s almost lunchtime and I’m hungry.”

“Then I’ll have the chief run Pete’s plates,” Dan said, ignoring the questions in her eyes once in the car. She’d have plenty more when he told her what Ryker found. “I’d rather just go back to the house.” He started the engine. “We can eat there.”

“Sure, no problem.” Rebecca suspected something. He knew by the way she gave in without arguing, saw it in the way she bit her bottom lip to keep herself from confronting him.

Christ, her compassionate silence on the ride home only drove the knife deeper. Dan got out of the car and palmed the house keys she trusted him with. He found the bottle of beer tucked away at the back of the lowest shelf, twisted the cap off and chugged it. Maybe he’d be the one to knock her off the wagon with one vicious shove.

Hell, it couldn’t get much worse.

“Okay then.” Rebecca tossed her purse on the table and faced him, hands on hips. “You’re in a pissy mood. I get it. I have them sometimes myself.” She walked the few remaining steps to him and rammed her finger into his chest. “But when I do, I try my best not to take them out on people around me.” He took another sip of beer while he grappled with a way to tear her world apart. Her finger moved to tap her own chest. “Have I done something to set you off?”

He took a gulp this time. “No.”

“If you don’t stop
